FruitFX Coconut Compressor: Smooth, Musical Compression from an Exciting New Pedal-Maker

ArticlesHardwareReviews

FruitFX Coconut Compressor Overview

The FruitFX Coconut Compressor is a refreshing take on compression—transparent, musical, and designed to enhance your playing without ever feeling heavy-handed. While some compressors can render your tone squashed and lifeless, the Coconut Compressor manages to retain clarity and dynamics even when pushed hard. For me, this is about as close to an “always on” pedal as it gets: it elevates most everything I play, smoothing out peaks, bringing subtle nuances forward, and adding a touch of polish that makes the guitar (and even bass) sit perfectly in a mix.

Construction and Design

As with all FruitFX pedals, the Coconut Compressor is handmade, features true bypass switching, and is powered by a standard 9VDC supply. The build quality is top-notch: rugged enough for gigging, but with the playful and clean design aesthetic that FruitFX is quickly becoming known for. While sound quality is obviously most important, I really like the cream, orange, and brown color scheme. Its simplified controls mean you can get to a great sound quickly, without endless tweaking. Similar to the exceptional CloudDriver, the enclosure doesn’t take up too much space on a pedalboard.

Layout and Controls

The Coconut Compressor features a straightforward set of controls that make dialing in the appropriate amount of compression both easy and inspiring:

  • Volume – Controls the pedal’s output level, allowing you to balance or boost your signal after compression.

  • Blend – Mixes your dry (uncompressed) signal with the compressed one. This keeps your tone natural while still delivering the benefits of compression.

  • Chunky – Adjusts sustain (the length of time compression is applied). Adding more increases low-end weight and sustain, though higher settings can verge into light grit on clean tones.

  • Smooth Switch – Toggles between two compression styles. Engaged, it provides a looser, rounded feel with slightly less low end. Disengaged, it offers sharper, more defined compression with more punch.

This streamlined control set makes it nearly impossible to get a bad sound—everything is useful and musically voiced.

Sound Quality and Applications

The Coconut Compressor is exceptionally transparent, letting your instrument’s natural tone shine through. Subtle settings provide gentle polish, while higher settings can deliver bold sustain without sacrificing clarity. Unlike many compressors, it never muddies up your sound or dulls your dynamics. I own an MXR Dyna-Comp and while I love it for its quirks, it is very heavy handed compressor and extremely noisy. The Coconut Compressor on the other hand is far more gentle, and quiet as can be.

It’s versatile enough for all kinds of playing:

  • Rhythm guitar: evens out strums and adds consistency. I find it adds a touch of high end which can be great for ‘chunky’ rhythm work. Expect it behave differently with P90, single coil, or humbucking pickups.

  • Lead guitar: adds sustain and presence without losing bite. The added brightness helps here in allowing a lead part to cut though in a mix.

  • Bass: tightens up dynamics while keeping the low end strong. The wet/dry blend is super helpful here, preventing the compression from ever removing too much bass from the singal.

Paired with the FruitFX CloudDriver, the Coconut Compressor really shines. Placed first in the chain, it tames dynamics and sets the stage for the CloudDriver’s transparent overdrive. Together, they form a killer front-end setup that’s compact, intuitive, and sonically powerful. Have a look at the wonderful overview video from Marcos at FruitFX:

Summary

The FruitFX Coconut Compressor is a lovely compressor pedal in a crowded market, delivering a balance of simplicity, transparency, and musicality that makes it an easy recommendation. Its playful design, intuitive controls, and professional-grade tone make it equally suitable for seasoned players and newcomers alike. Always-on or used as a specific effect, the Coconut Compressor elevates your playing without ever getting in the way.

FruitFX continues to prove they’re one of the most exciting new pedal-makers, and the Coconut Compressor is further proof of their thoughtful, tone-first approach to design.

FruitFX just released the Melon Cube Fuzz Pedal, and it looks like another fantastic effect from this promising young company.
