Universal Audio UAFX Orion Tape Echo Pedal – A Stellar, Vintage-Inspired Delay for the Modern Player (Review + Demo)

Uncategorized

UAFX ORION OVERVIEW

Universal Audio’s UAFX Orion Tape Echo nails the hazy, three-dimensional magic of a ’70s Echoplex EP-3, then packages it in a modern, pedalboard-friendly box. Sometimes you unbox a pedal and feel inspired within seconds—and the Orion is that kind of pedal. UA’s EP-3 Preamp modeling adds tasteful coloration, the Wonk feature imparts inspiring imperfections, and the Feedback control can be pushed to feel wild, but is never overwhelming.

The Legacy of the Original Echoplex

The Maestro Echoplex EP-3, introduced in the early 1970s, is one of the most iconic tape delay units ever made. Unlike its tube-driven predecessors, the EP-3 featured a solid-state design that gave it a cleaner, more reliable sound while still retaining the warmth and character of tape. Its combination of lush, musical repeats and a now-famous preamp coloration made it a staple for players ranging from Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, Brian May, and more. The EP-3’s distinctive ability to move from tight slap-back to swirling, decaying echoes cemented its place as one of the most sought-after and influential delay units in history. Universal Audio faced no small feat in capturing the functionality and unmistakable sound of the EP-3 in a compact pedal format—but the UAFX Orion proves they were more than up to the task.

CONSTRUCTION AND DESIGN

When you purchase a product from UAD, makers of some of the most legendary hardware and software ever created, you can be confident you’ll be receiving a premium unit: the packaging is beautiful, the unboxing experience is thoughtful, and the pedal itself looks gorgeous on a board. The enclosure is compact, dense, and solid with a soft-touch footswitch and firm detents on the mini toggles that make it hard to mis-set on a dark stage. Rear-panel sliders for Bypass Mode and Preamp Mode keep the top plate clean, and the status LED even changes color to reflect preamp/bypass states—a smart, gig-ready touch. Power is standard 9VDC, center-negative, 250 mA via an isolated supply, and there’s USB-C for registration/firmware updates.

CONTROLS

Delay sets time from ~80–700 ms—and, as on a real tape echo, you’ll hear pitch alter when you twist it live, which is tons of fun.

Mix controls the unprocessed or processed signal and goes all the way to 100% wet.

Feedback travels from a single repeat into self-oscillation, yet Orion’s behavior is musical rather than unruly.

Rec Level lets you “hit the tape” for fat saturation or keep things pristine.

A three-way Tape switch selects Mint / Worn / Old machines, each with its own compression, headroom, and wobble personality.

Wonk, which dials wow, flutter, and modulation—subtle motion to full-tilt splices and seasick bends.

True or Trails bypass, and you can place the EP-3 preamp on the dry path (on or off) while it’s always active on the repeats—super useful for sweetening your core tone without touching your amp.

SOUND QUALITY

Tape Color & Depth: The three machine types are not gimmicks; they meaningfully shift the tone and feel of the Orion. Mint is tight and clear with a touch of percussiveness to the repeats; Worn leans vintage but still retains clarity; Old is warbly and degraded in the best way. The different tape types interact with the Wonk control with Mint serving as the most subtle, and Old featuring the most… wonk. The EP-3 preamp adds just the right low-mid push and softened top, making even clean amps feel record-ready.

Controlled Feedback: Crank Feedback and Orion blooms into singing self-oscillation that’s playable and responsive to picking dynamics. Crucially, it feeds back without ever going out of control—and in Trails mode those evolving repeats keep cascading even when you bypass, so transitions sound cinematic. (True bypass cuts echoes immediately; trails/buffered keeps them alive.)

From Slap to Infinite: At low Delay/Mix values, Orion nails snappy, dimension-adding slap-back. Open it up and you’re in otherworldly, ethereal infinite-repeat territory—pads that hang behind your chords, modulated tails that shimmer, and tape-spliced weirdness on demand with the Wonk knob.

APPLICATIONS

  • Country/Roots Slap: Turn the Feedback all the way down for a singular slap-back echo that elicits tones from the late 50s and early 60s.

  • Indie/Dream Pop Atmospheres: Turn Feedback values higher, and use the Worn/Old machines with medium Wonk create lush beds that make single-coil arpeggios feel huge.

  • Post-Rock/Dub Experiments: High Feedback for near-infinite tails; ride the Delay knob for pitch-dives and tape-stop moments that still sound musical. Trails keeps the textures flowing between parts.

  • Always-On Sweetener: Preamp ON with minimal Mix for subtle thickening and space; Orion doubles as a tone enhancer even when delay is barely audible.

  • Beyond Guitar: As a producer and mixing engineer, I often use re-amping to add character, depth, and strangeness to my already recorded tracks. Add UAFX Orion to everything from vocals, to keys, and even drums for that classic Echoplex sound.

UAFX ORION SUMMARY

The UAFX Orion Tape Delay is a beautifully built, clearly laid-out, stellar-sounding tape echo that balances authentic Echoplex EP-3 vibe with modern reliability. The enclosure and presentation feel premium, the control set is musician-first (with that very fun Wonk knob earning its front-panel real estate), and the sound ranges confidently from simple slap-back to otherworldly, ethereal infinite repeats. Most importantly, when you push it, UAFX Orion feeds back musically without spinning out, making it a creative instrument rather than just an effect. Add in the flexible preamp/bypass options and stage-proof ergonomics, and this is an easy strong recommendation for players who want album-worthy tape delay tones in a compact, road-ready box.
