OVERVIEW
The Cosmodio Instruments Glitch Witch is a fun and fresh take on the classic fuzz effect. At its heart, this boutique stompbox blends a snarling, fast-attack CMOS fuzz engine with a suite of auto-modulated, pitch-locked chaos-inducing effects. It lives at the crossroads of aggressive high-gain and glitch-driven rhythmic modulation, featuring sub-octave growl, bit-crushed textures, ring modulation bursts, and stuttering chop effects. Handmade in Massachusetts and built with a 100% analog signal path, the Glitch Witch commits fully to its retro-futurist ethos while remaining surprisingly versatile in the context of creative sound design and experimental fuzz applications.
CONSTRUCTION AND DESIGN
Physically, the Glitch Witch sits in a standard 1590BB-sized chassis with top-mounted jacks and a board-friendly footprint, ideal for pedalboards that don’t skimp on personality. The enclosure is adorned with striking artwork by GOLDSUIT, giving the pedal a bold, visual identity that matches its audacious sonic character. True-bypass switching and a relay-based “smart” footswitch let you choose between latching and momentary modes — a thoughtful touch that enhances performance flexibility. Powering the unit requires a standard 9 V DC center-negative supply, and current draw sits at roughly 25 mA.
CONTROLS
One of the Glitch Witch’s strongest suits is how its control set invites exploration without overwhelming the user. Each knob feels purposeful and reveals new expressive possibilities as you tweak settings. Obviously, the modulation is the main draw here, but the fuzz itself is an excellent effect. It kind of reminds me of my beloved ZVEX Fuzz Factory, but a bit less unhinged, that is until you engage the DIVIDE section.
Fuzz/Basic Tone Controls
- LEVEL – Master output for the fuzz side. Turning this up will push your amp or any pedals that follow the Glitch Witch harder.
-
GATE – This knob essentially sets the fuzz’s pre-gain and dynamic behavior. Lower settings give you more sustain and smoother fuzz saturation, while cranking it increases the gating effect, resulting in punchy, choppy decays and a bit of a ‘velcro’ effect.
-
HI & LO – Rather than a single tone control, Glitch Witch features a dual-band EQ. HI adjusts the high-frequency response, and can go from warm and rolled off to bright and biting. LO shifts the low-end heft and boom — give it more body and the fuzz gets thick and growly, pull it back and you reveal punchier mids and tighter grit. Together, these let you sculpt everything from classic vintage fuzz textures to scooped-out, sci-fi mayhem.
-
CLEAN – This is a dedicated control for the parallel clean path. Blending in the clean signal can add clarity, definition, or simply lend contrast against the wild fuzz character — a great feature when you want the chaos to sit musically in a mix.
Love the creepy glowing eyes when both sides of the pedal are engaged.
Modulation and Glitch Controls
-
DIVIDE (Toggle) – This is the gateway into the pedal’s more unusual territory. In its default position you’re in straight fuzz land; flick it on and the frequency dividers come alive, locking rhythmic modulation rates to the pitch of the notes you play. High notes generate faster rhythmic effects, low notes slow things down — something akin to the “Rhythmicon” concept pioneered by Leon Theremin decades ago.
-
VOICE – Once DIVIDE is engaged, VOICE lets you step through three distinctive divider-influenced modes: amplitude modulation / ring modulation textures, raw frequency modulation wobble, and a pitch-tracking instability that blurs clean pitch into glitchy chaos. Each voice presents a different flavor of rhythmic or harmonic deformation.
-
DIVISOR – Think of this like a rate control for the modulation. Turn it to adjust how quickly the division-related effects cycle relative to the pitch of your playing. It’s not a conventional LFO rate knob — it’s dynamically tied to the notes you strike, so you get a living, reactive modulation behavior that feels musical even at wild settings.
-
DEPTH – This knob sets how deeply the modulation or glitch effect influences the signal. At low depth you might hear subtle undertones; crank it up and the effect becomes full-on rhythmic destruction — glitch bursts, biting bit-crush artifacts, and pulsed mayhem.
SOUND QUALITY AND APPLICATIONS
Sonically, the Glitch Witch can be as subtle or as wild as you like. In traditional fuzz mode with DIVIDE off, it delivers raw CMOS fuzz with plenty of grit and harmonic richness. When you engage the divider and shift into modulation territory, the pedal’s personality transforms: phrases shatter into rhythmic pulses, glitchy stutters, sub-octave growls, and ring-mod-like metallic tones that flourish in creative contexts. I’ve tried it out on elements other than guitar, and the pedal is a lot of fun on synthesizer.
Where the place the Glitch Witch in the signal path matters a great deal. Because you can blend in the clean signal (whatever is happening before Glitch Witch), I enjoy placing another overdrive/distortion effect in front of it. Unless you’re hoping for absolute mayhem, I’d likely place reverb and delay after the Witch. I’m greatly enjoying the UAFX Galaxy ’74 somewhere after the Glitch Witch, adding hazy and unpredictable repeats to an already chaotic signal.
This pedal thrives in experimental rigs, sound design applications, and performances where unpredictability is a feature rather than a bug. Its reactive modulation — tied to pitch — makes playing feel alive: chords bloom into patterns, leads warp into rhythmic sequences, and even simple riffs get a fractal edge. If you’re chasing stuff that sits beside classic fuzz rather than inside it, this is a rewarding tool.
SUMMARY
The Cosmodio Instruments Glitch Witch isn’t just a fuzz — it’s an inspiring and surprising sonic experience built into a compact, boutique pedal. Its hybridization of classic analog fuzz with pitch-locked, auto-modulated chaos gives it a unique voice that’s equally at home in experimental setups as it is in adventurous rock and ambient contexts. Whether you want vintage-leaning grit or rhythmic glitch madness, the Glitch Witch delivers with character, depth, and a clear sense of design intent. Highly recommended for players and sound designers looking for a fuzz that can surprise you every time you stomp.
